NEW DELHI: Police have made little breakthrough in Headlines Today journalist Soumya Viswanathan’s murder case. Viswanathan was shot dead on Tuesday while driving home after a late night shift in office.

What has hit investigations is the absence of eyewitnesses. Though a taxi driver called the PCR van and informed them of the accident, the police claim they still have not found anybody who saw the assailants.

A senior police official said, “An employee of the Punjabi by Nature restaurant saw the car wobbling and hitting the central verge of the road.” But the sequence of events that led to the incident is not known.

Forensic experts who examined the Maruti Zen car found bullet marks on the front
number plate and believe it was chased before Soumya was shot at. But the police are still not sure whether Viswanathan was shot before or after her car rammed into the road divider.

DCP (South district) HGS Dhaliwal said, “The bullet hit the right side of Viswanathan’s head from behind. There were also marks of blue paint on her car, which could be from the divider or from another car that might have hit her car. These facts will be determined after forensic experts fully examine the car. The car will go through more forensic and ballistic tests before the number of bullet marks can be verified. Initially, we suspected it was a fatal accident as the policemen who found the car were not doctors and their priority was to get her to hospital. We are investigating the forensic evidence.”

The 26-year-old was rushed to the trauma centre at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where doctors declared her dead on arrival. The incident occurred at the Nelson Mandela Marg in southwest Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area.

The post-mortem on Tuesday revealed she had been shot at in the head. Doctors removed a .315 bore bullet (possibly fired from a country-made revolver) from her skull.
