WASHIM (Maharashtra): BJP prime ministerial candidate L K Advani on Wednesday assured that if BJP was voted back to power at the Centre, the NDA will give top priority to protect the interests of farmers in the country.

NDA will set up a national board for improving facilities at all important pilgrimage centres across the country in the swake of stampede in Himachal pradesh and Rajashtan.

Addressing a mammoth public meeting 'Vijay Sankalp' (a rally to pledge victory in general elections), Advani severely criticised the Centre for neglecting farmers all these days. Talking about loadshedding for several hours, pending irrigation projects and inadquate prices to cotton producers, he said that it was utter failure of UPA government which brought distess to farmers.

Advani did not spare the UPA on the Amarnath temple issue. He said that 100 acres of land was allotted for erecting the temple's temporary structures. But after three months, the Congress government bungled its allotment and allowed Kashmir separists into the land, he said. He thanked the people of Jammu who fought for the temple land.

Referring to poor handling of terrorism in the country, Advani said that the UPA government was not honouring Supreme Court's verdict upholding the death sentence of kingpin in the Parliament attack, Mohammad Afzal.

The kin of nine policemen, who lost their lives in saving 700 members of Parliament, have returned all the honours and medals the police received to government for showing disrespect to the martyrs, Advani said.

Advani said NDA had launched an ambitious river linking project with Shiv Sena member Suresh Prabhu as its head but UPA abandoned the same.

"The project could have solved both drought and flood situation in the country," he said, adding NDA would revive it.

He also alleged that the Congressmen in Maharashtra have misused the cow distribution scheme, meant for the kin of deceased farmers.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Gopinath Munde, who was also present on the occasion, said if the BJP comes to power in Maharashtra, those who have misused the funds of cow distribution scheme would be sent to jail.
