NEW DELHI: Attacking the Leader of Opposition and BJP's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani, the Congress on Wednesday said that some people talk about him as "father of fundamentalism" while expressing surprise at the statement of Advani that he was a "secular" person.
"Some people talk about him (Advani) as the father of fundamentalism ... We are surprised at his statement in Shillong that he is a secular person," Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed said here.
The spokesman referred to the statement of Advani in Shillong that he is not against Christians as he himself is a product of a Christian missionary school.
"When he goes to Shillong where Christians are in substantial numbers, he talks about Christians. When he went to Pakistan, he declared Jinnah as secular. You can understand his mental state with these statements," said the spokesman.
Ahmed said that Advani is an accused in the Babri Masjid demolition case and charged him with being instrumental in the communalisation of politics in the late 1980s with his rath yatra and the accompanying communal riots.
"It is really surprising that such a person claims that he is secular ... This is the double standards of Advani. He becomes pro Christian in Shillong and pro Jinnah in Pakistan," Ahmed said.
Accusing "Advani's organisations" and the Sangh parivar of engineering riots in Orissa, Ahmed said the people "recognise" his brand of politics and "condemn" it.
He also accused the BJP supported government in Orissa of failing to deploy central forces and check violence against Christians in the state.
