NEW DELHI: Children in the capital are in for a visual treat with the National School of Drama (NSD) organising twin festivals 'Bal Sangam' and 'Jashn-e-Bachpan' this month.

Both the festivals are being organised by the Theatre In Education (TIE) Company (Sanskar Rang Toli) of NSD as part of the school's golden jubilee celebrations. Established in 1989, Sanskar Rang Toli is one of the important educational resource centres in the country.

'Jashn-e-Bachpan', to be held from October 10 to 20, will showcase the works of theatre groups working with and for children. These groups represent various regions and languages from across the country.

The inauguration will be followed by the performance of 'Panchtantra' by the celebrated 'Little Ballet Troupe' from Bhopal.

'Bal Sangam' (National Festival/ Mela of Folk and Traditional Performing Arts by Children) will be held from October 12 to 18. The inaugural ceremony will be followed by performances of children from rural areas of various regions.

TIE Company consists of a group of actor-teachers working with and performing for children. The major focus of TIE Company is to perform creative, curriculum-based and participatory plays in schools specially designed and prepared for children of different age groups. The major thrust of the plays is to create an atmosphere to encourage children, to raise questions, make decisions and choices with an awareness of themselves within larger society.

TIE Company has done more than 800 performances of 26 plays in Delhi and other parts of the country. Over 5.5 lakh children, apart from college students, teachers, parents and theatre lovers, have witnessed these plays.

The Bal Sangam Festival aims at providing a platform for folk and traditional child artistes by presenting their performances before a wide audience. The Festival also attempts to acquaint children with the rich and varied cultural heritage of our country and thereby to preserve and nurture the traditional arts through their participation.

'Jashn-e-Bachpan', organised since 1998, was initially an annual theatre festival by children as well as by adults for children.
