LONDON: Two Indian immigrants have been convicted and jailed for raping a prostitute in Swindon in February, and face deportation to India after serving half their sentence.
Arvinder Singh and Karnail Singh, based in Southall, were sentenced to imprisonment last week after a jury found them guilty of brutal attack on the unnamed prostitute. Arvinder, 22, was jailed for eight years while Karnail was imprisoned for seven years.
The two were electrical workers and came to Swindon to work at a property on Manchester Road. On February 6, they reportedly lured a prostitute inside the property and attacked her.
After dragging her upstairs Arvinder pulled out a clump of her hair while Karnail slammed a sash window shut on her fingers as she tried to get away. Both men then raped the woman, first forcing her to perform oral sex on them and then having intercourse.
Police who examined the scene a few days later recovered a condom from a flat roof at the back to the house. It contained DNA linking Karnail and Arvinder to the attack.
After arrest, they both denied having sex with her even after being presented with the forensic findings. But at trial they said the prostitute consented to sex after trying to cheat them out of money.
Passing the sentence, Judge William Hart told them: The jury has convicted both of you on what was in my judgement clear evidence. You both believed that your victim being a prostitute meant either that she would not complain about what happened to her or that if she did complain she might not be believed or might not have the courage to see the case through to trial.
But she has had the courage and the jury has believed her and rightly so. There are in my judgement aggravating features in this case of rape. There were two of you involved in the attack upon her. She was prevented from leaving and she was effectively imprisoned in that house for about twenty minutes.
She was injured by the way that you handled her, deliberately by you Arvinder Singh and accidentally but painfully by you Karnail Singh.
Arvinder had been in the UK for about five years and Karnail, had arrived here six weeks before the attack in February.
