PANAJI: Tension gripped the South Goa's coastal village Benaulim with a mob opposing a mega housing project in the village.
       
The unruly mob attacked houses of local sarpanch and panch members after holding a massive rally at the police station.
       
The trouble began on Tuesday evening when Colva police, under which jurisdiction Benaulim village falls, intercepted a bus to arrest the alleged accused involved in attacking the local panchayat.
       
The village, a famous tourist destination with a prestine beach to reckon with, is opposing a mega housing project and had violant gram sabha meetings targeting local panchayat members.
       
The villagers marched to the police station on Tuesday evening when two of their leaders were arrested on Tuesday for vandalising the panchayat office earlier last week. The situation turned tensed forcing the police to requisition additional platoon of Indian Reserve Batallion (IRB).
       
Sensing trouble, the police released both the leaders as village continued reeling under the tension.        

The incident that was reported during wee hours, the mob allegedly attacked houses of local lady sarpanch Carmelina Fernande and another panch damaging the property and vehicles.
       
Police said that they are yet to receive formal complaint in this matter.
       
"Sarpanch is reluctant to lodge a complaint as the mob may turn more violent," a police official said.
       
Benaulim village which remained abuzz with the tourist activities despite the off-season, remained tensed. Police had increaed their presence in the village while local market was partially opened.
       
"The situation is under control," Police Inspector Edwinolaco said.
