NEW DELHI: With deteriorating power situation becoming a major issue ahead of the assembly polls, the Delhi government on Wednesday warned distribution companies of strict action if they failed to improve the situation soon.

Opposition BJP raised the issue in the assembly, lashing out at the Congress government for the "mess" in the capital which continued to reel under power cuts for another day on Wednesday.

Replying to a special mention discussion in the Assembly, Power Minister A K Walia said government was doing everything possible to ensure that no area in the city faced any power cuts.

Walia said he has told the discoms not to resort to any load shedding and any complacency on their part would invite strict action from the government.

The government would take strong action against officials of discoms if complaints of negligence and inflated bill are found true, he said.

On BJP's allegations that the government's secret understanding with discoms was responsible for the mess, Walia challenged the party to file a case with CBI to prove its charges.

Meanwhile several parts of the city, particularly South Delhi's Greater Kailash and other adjoining areas, faced load-shedding for varying duration.

Many areas in Dwarka, Noida and East Delhi also went without power for several hours on Tuesday night where denizens sweated out high humidity levels.

A power department official, however, claimed that the situation improved on Wednesday as there was no power cuts when there was peak demand of 3,516 MW. He said the maximum shortfall was 65 MW.

The official said total generation from production units in Delhi was 1,132 MW against the installed capacity of 1,400 MW.

He said the "widening gap" between demand and supply was forcing discoms to go for load shedding in many areas.

The power situation in the city deteriorated since last month due to under frequency in the Northern Grid.

"Under frequency in the Grid is creating problems in the supply of power. The optimal frequency of the Grid is 50 Hz and whenever it goes below 48.5 Hz, then shedding is done so that the Grid does not collapse," the official said.

The BJP raised the issue of power woes for the second consecutive day on Wednesday as the party created a storm in the Assembly on Tuesday lashing out at the government.
