Operation ‘help North Indians’ — Biharis to be more specific — was launched in the city on Friday, with Bollywood personalities cutting across political lines announcing a joint initiative called Punarwaas Flood Relief Mission (PFRM) for Bihar’s flood-hit region.
“Five districts are completely submerged while three more are partially inundated due to Kosi river flooding embankments. Such a calamity has never occurred in 150 years,” PFRM initiator and film director Prakash Jha told mediapersons.
He announced setting up of a rehabilitation camp in Supol village where PFRM would help 5,000 flood-affected people. “The camp will retain these people for at least a period of nine months to a year from now. Unicef, Prayas, Sulabh, United Way as well as corporates and actors like Nana Patekar, Manmohan Shetty and Ajay Devgan (combined donation of over Rs 1 crore) have already contributed to help the affected people in Bihar,” Jha said.
Actor and BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha said, “This is the first time that a chief minister has sought Rs 1,000 crore assistance along with foodgrain and has immediately been allocated Rs 1,010 crore. I laud the Union Government. I also urge Mumbai residents to come to the aid of Bihar.”
Jha pointed out that while he was with Patekar, who donated Rs 25 lakh for the flood relief effort, the latter received a call by someone asking him whether he was aiding the Bihari cause with his donation. “Patekar promptly asked the caller whether he would prefer such a flood wreaking havoc in Maharashtra rather than Bihar,” Jha said. Actors Shekhar Suman, Manoj Bajpai, Neetu Chandra and singer Udit Narayan have already lent their support to the cause.
