KOLKATA: The Friday morning mass at Mother House - the headquarters of Missionaries of Charity here - marked the start of a day of remembrance for Mother Teresa on her 11th death anniversary.

The mass was led by Kolkata's Archbishop Lucas Sirkar and attended by nuns and other volunteers of Missionaries of Charity.

Mother Teresa's tomb was decorated with white flowers and candles.

"Thousands of devotees of Mother across India will be coming to pay their homage here throughout Friday. We will be attending to them and hold joint prayer sessions. Besides, there will be special feedings of the poor at our homes across Kolkata," one of the nuns of Missionaries of Charity, Sister Christi, said.

There will be candle-light processions taken out by devotees of Mother across the city in the evening.

Mother Teresa - the Roman Catholic nun who worked for the poor, sick and orphaned - died on Sep 5, 1997 at the age of 87. She was beatified in 2003 after a woman claimed that Mother's touch had healed her incurable tumour. Millions of Catholics are waiting for news of another miracle that would uplift her to sainthood.
