NEW DELHI: As the 2010 Commonwealth Games near, the Delhi administration is gearing up to give a taste of Indian music and food to visiting foreign teams.

Sources in the administration said Games officials were talking to folk artistes from Rajasthan, West Bengal and Punjab and some classical musicians to welcome the visitors.

“Since Indian classical music is very popular and Rajasthani folk singers Manganiars are well known, we would invite them to perform, so that the various teams get a taste of Indian culture,” a senior Delhi government official said.

He said a team of renowned artists had been constituted to shortlist the performers and to send them invites on behalf of the administration.

Senior officials also said both singers and instrumentalists would be invited for cultural programmes to be organised near Indian Gate, Red Fort, Qutb Minar, Humayun’s Tomb and the Old Fort.

“Since these artistes will perform at these historical places, it would give a chance to the players to know Indian culture and the venues,” the official said.

The administration has also decided to invite chefs from Hyderabad, Lucknow and Rajasthan.
