KOLKATA: Not satisfied with its success in stopping work at the Singur plant, the Trinamool Congress has embarked on a smear campaign against the Tata Group, with Tata Tea its prime target.

Party MLA and the leader of Opposition in the West Bengal assembly, Partho Chattopadhyay, has been constantly referring to Tata Tea to prove his point that the Tatas did not have any affinity to the state. “It is a proven fact that Tata Tea has moved out of the tea garden business in Bengal. So the propaganda, on part of the company as well state government, that the Tatas are dedicated to Bengal is false,” said Chattopadhyay.

But the reality is that Tata Tea, which is transforming itself from a plantation company to a global tea brand, has restructured its entire plantation business.  Another classic “half-truth” campaign has been spearheaded by party chief, Mamata Banerjee herself.
Quoting only one selective operative part from a letter written to her from Tata Motors managing director, Ravi Kant, she said “Tata Motors’ management has itself admitted that 650 acres is enough for the small car plant.” However, she completely suppressed another important operative part of the letter, where Kant explained why the remaining land was necessary to give the factory complete shape.
