Mukhbiir attempts to glance into the shadowy lives of informers via a young man who is a victim of circumstance. Sammir Dattani plays the mukhbiir, recruited by the intelligence department and mentored by an officer played by Om Puri. From the opening scenes of Dattani praying under a waterfall followed by a special forces chasing an unknown criminal, the audience is already confused -- who is being chased, why?
Thereafter the film tackles several large crimes from illegal organ trade to drug smuggling and serial bomb blasts in Mumbai.
After Rudraksh, director Mani Sankar continues to display a flagrant disregard for the audience. Had he kept the length to below two hours, he might have engaged better with the viewer, however Dattani is too 'groomed' and 'chikna' to pull off the role. His informer never changes his look nor does he use disguises and carries the same bag throughout which should have exposed him for sure. Dattani's performance lacks intensity, oscillating from one-expression brooding to a Rajshri films-like joy.
The story of a chameleon-like informer who infiltrates gangs, collates information and risks his own life to help defend the state is a solid one, but Mani Sankar fails to convey any of the angst, conflict or even strategic brilliance associated with informers. A haphazard narrative, superfluous songs, an immature love story and some shocking miscasting (like Alok Nath as a don) add to the mess. And who is 'didi' being massaged by Sushant Singh? For all the wrong reasons, the film is almost worth watching for that scene alone!
