Army guns down militants who trapped 4 kids and mother

SRINAGAR: Terror revisited Jammu on Wednesday when heavily armed militants stormed a house and took four children, aged three to nine, and their mother hostage. The three militants, who are believed to have infiltrated through the International Border at Kanuchak on Tuesday, killed four persons before storming the house in Bantalab-Chinore.

In a day-long gunbattle that stretched till the night, security forces killed two of the three militants holed up in the residential building. Reports at the time of going to press said the third militant too had been killed and that the army was preparing to enter the house.
The condition of the hostages was not yet known.

One militant was killed in the early stage of the encounter that began around 7 am, police said. The second militant was eliminated in the evening after a three-hour lull in the exchange of fire, police said.

Witnesses said three militants dressed in police uniform flagged a lift in a three-wheeled load carrier near Mishriwala-Domana. On being intercepted by the army at Domana, the militants opened fire, killing one JCO and injuring two others.

Later, the militants drove to the nearby Chinore area where they killed the autorickshaw driver, a milkman and another civilian before barging into the house of Billo Ram. “They took six people, including four children and their mother, hostage”, said inspector general of police (IGP) Jammu K Rajendra.

The attack came on a day when the Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti (SASS) was planning to hold a mega rally to step up pressure on the government to transfer land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). The SASS postponed the rally after the civil administration advised them to put off their plans in view of the security situation.

Those taken hostage were Sunita, 35 and her children, Sheetal 9, Kajal 4, Vipan 3 and Asheel 7. Ashok Kumar 27, who was in the house, has also been taken hostage.
