CHANDIGARH: The Sikhs’ protest against Singh is Kinng got a shot in arm when the newly-appointed Akal Takht jathedar Gurbachan Singh lent his support to the agitators, saying that “objectionable” scenes in the movie should be removed and the producer of the film and the actor, Akshay Kumar, should tender an unconditional apology for “hurting the sentiments” of Sikhs.

“The Sikh organisations have a right to protest against the movie, as it has objectionable scenes showing Sikhs in poor light. I support all Sikh organisations objecting to the movie in their areas,” he said.

The jathedar said the SGPC had asked the producer to make changes in Singh is Kinng when it was shown to a group of SGPC members before release. However, the producer expressed his inability to delete some “unpleasant” parts, which “angered” Sikhs.

“There was no use of showing the film to the SGPC members, as the producer did not make the required changes. I have discussed the matter with the members who also expressed resentment against the release of the film,” he added.

The protesters said the portrayal of Sikhs in the film was “insulting” because the main character had been shown dancing with semi-nude girls, which had hurt the sentiments of the community.

The Jathedar remarked that in order to avoid such a situation in the future, I appeal to all film producers that whenever they make films on Sikhs, they should first get clearance from the SGPC.

As Singh is Kinng opened to a full house in Amritsar on Friday, 15 to 30 activists of Sikh Student Federation of India (Jatha Bhindrawala Mehta), with swords and sticks, stormed a theatre in Civil Lines to stop the show. Police arrested four and lodged a case against 12 for rioting.
