PUNE: It seems that the Team India is all set to have some young faces for the five One Day International matches against Sri Lanka. If sources in the selection committee are to be believed, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan, who have impressed the selectors in the recent Emerging Players Tournament in Australia, have a fair chance to make it into the ODI side. Not just the batting line-up, even the bowlers can find a new companion, as Mumbai’s Dhaval Kulkarni is also likely to get the selectors’ nod.

Delhi’s Dhawan was the second highest run scorer in the tournament with 334 runs in six matches, with an average of 66.8. Dhawan’s unbeaten 184 off 147 balls, including 20 fours and five sixes against South Africa Emerging Players, was the highest by any batsman in the tournament. Apart from that knock, he also scored two half centuries,  including 75 against Australian Institute of Sports and 55 against New Zealand Emerging Players.

Kohli, who is also from Delhi, led the winning Indian team in the under-19 World Cup 2008. He also had a party time in Australia, scoring 204 runs in five matches with an average of 51. His personal highest in the tournament came against the New Zealand, when he scored an unbeaten 120 and helped his team beat the Kiwis.

Mumbai’s Kulkarni, on the other hand, got only two matches to play, but he topped the average chart with and impressive average of 9.33 and economy rate of 4 runs per over. In the two matches, he took three wickets, giving away only 28 runs.

Incidentally, all three of them have played in the first edition of the Indian Premier League. Dhawan was a part of Delhi Daredevils; Kohli with Bangalore Royal Challengers and Kulkarni with Mumbai Indians.

On the other hand, Yusuf Pathan and MS Gony might be dropped. Chances for Irfan Pathan are learnt to be are also looking bleak. Yusuf, who played his first Asia Cup, got only one innings to bat and to worsen the matter, he could not even open his account. The all-rounder also failed to impress with the ball too, as he could manage only two wickets in four matches.

Dinesh Karthik, who has been miserable both in front and behind the wickets in the Test series so far, might face the axe, and make way for Gujarat’s Parthiv Patel, who had a good domestic and IPL season. Yuvraj Singh will regain his appointed place just as Zaheer Khan.
