Rs 44,000 cr project may be first to see FDI into the state’s power sector

KOLKATA: Universal Success Energy, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Universal Success Enterprises, will submit a pre-feasibility report on its proposed 10,000 megawatt (mw) thermal power plant in West Bengal to the state government in the next two months.

With an estimated cost of Rs 44,000 crore, the project is set to be the first to see foreign direct investment into the power sector of West Bengal. Universal Success has plans to set up similar power plants in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

After a meeting with West Bengal power minister Mrinal Banerjee on Monday, Universal spokesman and NRI businessman Prasun Mukherjee said in the feasibility report, the company would identify the site for the power plant.

“We prefer a coastal area for the proposed power plant. The total land requirement for the project will be 5,000 acres,” Mukherjee said. He added that the company would purchase the land directly from farmers.

The NRI businessman said the company already has coal blocks of around 15 million tonnes. “For the proposed power plants in all the three states, we will import coal entirely from Singapore,” he said, adding that the Bengal project would provide employment to 14,000 people.

Sources said that the power produced by this plant would cater to Bengal’s requirements. Universal Success will sell the power to the grid at a pre-negotiated price.

After the meeting, Bengal power minister Mrinal Banerjee said that the state government did not expect any problems in land acquisition as Universal Success was buying the land directly from farmers.

“The state government would provide only administrative support to Universal Success,” Banerjee said.

On the proposed Maharashtra and Gujarat projects, Mukherjee said that the governments of the two states have promised the company all the support required for land acquisition.
