SRINAGAR: Chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s exit has prompted the pro-Amarnath land allotment protestors in Jammu to suspend their agitation for a week to give the new set-up a chance to reconsider their demand of restoring 39.88 kanals of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

Jammu was comparatively calm after eight days of violence, allowing the authorities to lift the day curfew in most parts of the city on Tuesday.

Hindu United Front (HUF), an amalgam of saffron parties, took the step back decision after a brainstorming session in Jammu. It set a seven-day deadline for the state government to accept its demand till which time the agitation will stay suspended.

“We have decided to suspend the strike for seven days to allow people to stock up supplies. We have also given an ultimatum to the government to restore land to SASB. If the land is not restored in the seven days, we will launch a massive agitation and the government will be responsible for the consequences,” HUF constituent Kranti Dal’s leader Anan Sharma said.

Sharma pressed the HUF demanded for a recall of governor NN Vohra. “We want a person with impeccable integrity appointed governor of the state. We will stage a dharna before Raj Bhavan on Wednesday to press the demands,” he said.

Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Party demanded a CBI probe into the alleged financial irregularities by SASB.
