LUCKNOW: At least 27 people perished in heavy rains lashing large parts of UP since Sunday evening, pushing the death count in the state this monsoon to 73.

Heavy downpours toppled mud houses, flooded low-lying areas, uprooted trees and snapped communication links at many places in the state. All major rivers were in spate, as district administrations stepped up efforts to provide relief to the marooned.

Most of the latest fatalities occurred due to house collapses, officials said, adding that nine rain-related deaths took place in Rae Bareli, seven in Fatehpur, six in Manipur and five in Agra. In Fatehpur, surging waters submerged a railway bridge over the Pandu river affecting movement of trains, they said.

Low-lying areas were inundated raising the spectre of water-borne diseases afflicting the state.
