Differences on N-deal will not change anything

KOLKATA: Despite severe differences with the left parties over the Indo-US nuclear deal, the West Bengal unit of the Congress does not favour drastic counter-action by the Centre, which might pose hurdles in the implementation of the mega industrial and infrastructure development projects in the state.

In fact, both the CPI(M) and the Congress in Bengal feel that the Indo-US nuclear deal and industrial-cum-infrastructure development of the state, are two separate issues and hence, should not be mixed up.

The issue of separating nuclear politics from economic development was raised by the CPI(M) central committee and Lok Sabha member, Md Salim, who said, “The two are different issues. Hence, I do not think that the N-deal will have any adverse impact on the state’s projects. In fact, it would be politically correct for Congress, if they do not pose hurdles for such projects that involve the state’s development issue,” he said.

The Congress leadership in West Bengal too understands that spontaneous central assistance for the quick industrial and infrastructure projects of West Bengal will prove to be more politically productive than any drastic counter action by the Union government. Hence, the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) leaders have requested the AICC and the Union government to isolate the issue of the state’s development from the nuclear deal impasse.

According to WBPCC sources, the party leadership understands quite well that any action by the Union government that might delay a single project in West Bengal will give CPI(M) an opportunity to project Congress and the union government as anti-Bengal.

And as senior Congress MLA, Manas Bhuyian, says, “The Congress is a greater well-wisher of West Bengal than CPI(M). Both the Congress and union government have always extended a helping hand for the industrial and economic developments of West Bengal. We would continue to do so in future too.”
