KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will weigh all possible political implications and alliance possibilities before taking a decision on whether to vote in favour or against the UPA government in the event of any no-confidence motion at the house of the Parliament.

Although Mamata has officially claimed to have maintained equal distance from both the BJP and Congress for the time being, she and her party leaders are holding informal meetings with the two. While Mamata herself is present during informal meetings with Congress leaders especially Somen Mitra, trusted lieutenants have been given the job of interacting with the BJP.

Asked if she would vote for or against the UPA government in case of a no-confidence motion, Mamata said she is yet to decide on this matter. “We will first discuss the matter within the party,” she replied.

Political observers feel it would quite difficult for her to reach an instant decision on the issue. They feel in case of trust vote, Mamata will have three options — vote in favour, against the UPA or abstain.

They add there is more chance for Mamata to exercise the third option — abstaining — unless she finalises alliances in the meantime, chances of which are remote.

“In case the CPI(M) decides to vote against the UPA government after withdrawing support, Mamata, going by her track record, will never follow the same line. But again, voting in favour of the UPA will mean she will have to now officially announce breaking of ties with the NDA, which she had been carefully avoiding for quite some time. So in all probability she will most probably abstain from voting to avoid being identified officially either with BJP or Congress,” a senior political analyst here said.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee leadership is confident that in case of an official divorce with the CPI(M), convincing Mamata to join hands with the Congress will not be a difficult task.
