ISLAMABAD: Asif Ali Zardari, the chairman of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party, is in troubled waters: the youngsters of the Bhutto family, feeling sidelined by their uncle’s emergence on the political horizons as the main power player after their aunt Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, have decided to get united and launch a drive against Zardari to regain the Bhutto legacy as well as the family property.

According to sources, Fatima Bhutto, the rebel niece of Benazir, is uniting all the young Bhuttos of the family to spearhead a campaign against the autocratic attitude of her uncle, Asif Zardari, who at present runs the government in Pakistan as the de facto head.

The decision to unite the Bhutto family was taken recently at a meeting of the Bhutto elders along with party leaders and workers at 70-Clifton, Karachi, where the portraits of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, his daughter Benazir Bhutto, and her brothers Murtaza Bhutto and Shahnawaz Bhutto have been displayed at the main gate of the traditional family house.

The family insiders say the Bhuttos believe Asif Zardari is running the PPP like a corporate company and not letting any of the Bhutto family members have their due share in the family property.

Circles close to the disgruntled Bhutto family members said Fatima Bhutto recently travelled to England and brought back her first cousin, Sassi Bhutto, the only daughter of Benazir’s younger brother Shahnawaz Bhutto.

With a view to launch their anti-Zardari drive, Fatima, Sassi and Zulfiqar, the younger son of Benazir’s second brother Murtaza Bhutto, would be travelling to the Larkana city of Sindh on Sunday to visit the family graveyard and to pay homage to the four great Bhutto martyrs - late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, Shahnawaz Bhutto and Murtaza Bhutto. “Fatima, Sassi and Zulfiqar are now on a mission to get back from Zardari the possession of their politics, wealth, and property,” these circles say.

“The real Bhuttos have a feeling that their ancestors and party loyalists have rendered sacrifices while the Zardari family has swept away the fruits,” they added.
