BSP legislator held for threatening to kill paramour
LUCKNOW: In another embarrassment for Uttar Pradesh (UP) chief minister Mayawati, BSP MLA Sribhagwan Sharma alias Guddu Pandit was arrested in Noida’s Gautam Buddha Nagar on Sunday for allegedly hounding and threatening to kill his paramour Shital Birla, a research scholar at Agra University.
Two other Bahujan Samaj Party MLAs, both ministers of state, have already been sent to jail this month. While Jamuna Nishad was arrested for the murder of a policeman, Anand Sen Yadav was nabbed for plotting the murder of his lady love.
Amarmani Tripathi, in jail in the Madhumita Shukla murder case, was also a minister of state in the then Mayawati regime in 2003.
In the latest case, the arrest was quite dramatic. UP Police sources told DNA after Shital Birla levelled serious charges against the BSP MLA before the media in Agra on Saturday, Mayawati called him to her Delhi residence on Sunday.
She had also called Noida Police who arrested Sharma as he left Mayawati’s house. Officially, police said the MLA was arrested from Noida sector 53.
Additional DG (law&order) Brij Lal told reporters Sharma, MLA from Debai in Bulandshahr, had been charged under several sections of the IPC, including illegal confinement, rape, fraud, performing a second marriage illegally and hatching a murder plot.
“Shital has said in her complaint that the MLA married her at a temple about two years ago and that she was not aware at that time that he was already married and had two children,” he said.
However, the MLA refuted all charges. Talking to reporters while being taken to Kasganj in west UP where the case is registered, he said, “This is a conspiracy hatched by my political rivals to defame me. I have full faith in the law and Behnji (Mayawati).”
Sharma is alleged to have started plotting Shital’s murder when she started mounting pressure on him for a formal marriage. “He wanted to keep me as his concubine. This was just not acceptable to me,” Shital said.
“When I asked for a proper marriage, he started threatening to kill me. I was sexually exploited and mentally tortured...I was raped several times,” she said.
Shital alleged two false cases had been registered against her and her close friend Pramod Pathak at the behest of the BSP MLA. In fact, Pathak was arrested by Bulandshahr Police on Saturday for a car theft. Shital claims the case is false.
However, Brij Lal clarified the police officer who had arrested Pathak had been suspended. “Adequate security has also been provided to Shital and family,” he said.
