ROURKELA: Hitting out at the UPA government for price rise and alleged farmers' suicide, BJP leader L K Advani on Sunday said his party and its allies were committed to work for the removal of poverty and backwardness and development of six lakh villages in the country.

Launching the poll campaign for BJP-BJD combine in Orissa at a 'vijay sankalpa rally' (resolve of victory) in presence of BJD leader and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, he said 'sankalpa' was not just to gain power but to remove poverty, backwardness, to provide drinking water to all and to develop six lakh villages of the country.

Lashing out at the Congress-led UPA, Advani said it had failed to provide social security, control inflation and prevent suicide by farmers by offering them financial help.

"There was no price rise during NDA government but now common people are unable to provide essential food to their children", Advani said, adding people were in distress due to the failure of the Centre in checking price rise.

Stating that prices had gone so high that people were afraid of constructing their own houses, he said during NDA rule, prices were under control and the country marched ahead on the path of development.

Addressing the meeting, Naveen Patnaik presented a list of developmental programmes introduced by his government in Orissa. Despite natural calamities and non-cooperation from the centre, the state had been moving forward in industrialisation and agriculture, he said.

He claimed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had not released a single paisa for flood grant despite his commitment in August 2006 for providing Rs 200 crore.
