PSI accused for involvement in SIMI

AMRAVATI: A Police Sub Inspector (PSI) has been made a co-accused in a case related to banned outfit Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI)for his alleged involvement in the organisation's activities here.

Police have filed a chargesheet against PSI Riyazuddin Deshmukha, who was posted here in 2001 and presently serving at Aurangabad.

Police sources told PTI that Deshmukh has been made co-accused in the SIMI related case of the year 2001 wherein his son and brother-in-law were involved.

A supplementary chargesheet had been filed against him in the court of Judicial Magistrate here, they added.

Though the chargesheet has been filed, the police department has not suspended the PSI nor has it arrested him.

Police said that Nagpuri Gate police had arrested four alleged SIMI activists on September 28, 2001 including Deshmukh's brother-in-law and son.

Police said that printing material used for printing a SIMI weekly was also seized from PSI's house.

Investigations had revealed Deshmukh's alleged involvement in the activities of the banned organization following which a permission was sought from Home Ministry to make him co-accused, police said.

A supplementary chargesheet was filed on February 25, 2008, making Deshmukh co-accused in the case, they said.
