BJP continues winning streak in Karnataka

Continuing its good run in Karnataka, the BJP has bagged three of the four Legislative Council seats for which results were declared on Saturday.

BANGALORE: Continuing its good run in Karnataka, the BJP has bagged three of the four Legislative Council seats for which results were declared on Saturday.

In a setback to the Congress, the party nominee and senior leader H K Patil (21,327 votes) lost to Mohan Limbikai of the BJP (25,737) by 4,410 votes in the Karnataka West Graduates constituency.

Patil, a former Minister, had also lost the recent Assembly elections.

In the North-East Teachers segment, BJP's Shashil G Namoshi (10,533 votes) scored a big victory of 9,207 votes over Congress rival Ajagond Annaraya Chennappa (1326 votes).

Dakshina Kannada Local Authorities constituency was also bagged by the BJP when its candidate Kota Srinivasa Poojary (3110) defeated Nityananda Munrota (2817) of the Congress.

JDS nominee Puttanna (7550) won the Bangalore Teachers constituency, defeating Neelaiah of the BJP (5078).

The Legislative Council elections were held on June 26. In the May Elections to 224-member Legislative Assembly, BJP won 110 seats, the Congress 80 and the JDS 28. The BJP formed the Government with the help of six independents.

"People have reiterated their confidence in the BJP and in the leadership of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa. People have not given credence to the wrong propaganda of the Congress. We are sure the trend would continue for the Lok Sabha elections, too," Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai said in his reaction to the results.

Next govt in Centre cannot be formed without SP: Mulayam

LUCKNOW: Seeking support from Dalits and OBC's to form the next government in Centre, Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Saturday said backward classes would play a crucial role in the coming Lok Sabha polls.

He claimed that the Samajwadi party will be their in the next Central government.

"The next government at the Centre cannot be formed without SP", Yadav said while addressing a meeting of backward cell of the party.

Yadav blamed Chief Minister Mayawati for fooling the backwards and doing nothing for their welfare.

He also mentioned that the previous SP government had included 17 OBC castes in Schedule Caste category but the decision was revoked by the BSP government and demanded immediate inclusion of these castes in SC category.
