LONDON:  Barely two days after accusing the Metropolitan Police chief of racial discrimination, a top Asian cop is said to have been apparently threatened with a sack from the force.

Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur was summoned to the Scotland Yard by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair who told him that he would deal with him “robustly and quickly” if he did not step into line, British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported.

“Every member of the Met works to my direction and must meet my requirements. Any other position is impossible. If that doesn’t occur, I will deal with the matter quickly,” Sir Ian was quoted as saying.

The comments came after Ghaffur, the most senior Asian officer, said that he would sue Sir Ian as he was “sidelined” from key security meetings linked to the preparations for the London Olympics in 2012. He has also alleged that he was put under pressure not to disclose his unease over new laws to detain terror suspects for up to 42 days.

However, the Metropolitan Police chief has refuted the accusations of racism and suggestions that relations between the two men had broken down so badly that they no longer talk to each other. “Tarique is a respected officer and a role model and any suggestion I will not speak with him is complete nonsense. However, I can’t accept allegations from any party that any concerns of theirs can be  attributed to racial motivation from me or my senior colleagues.”

Just few days back another senior Asian officer, Commander Shabir Hussain, had also accused Sir Ian of sidelining ethnic minorities, using “very significant influence” to push his candidates for promotion.
