Varsity to fill 42,000 seats, implement OBC quota

NEW DELHI:It is that make-or-break time of the year again for students. The admission rush at the prestigious Delhi University is on, with over 90,000 aspirants vying for about 42,000 degree seats.

The last date for submission of application forms for various courses was Monday evening. According to the university’s deputy dean (student welfare) Seema Parihar, “Out of the 90,000 applicants, about 15,000 submitted their forms on Monday. This is probably the highest number of applications received on the last day of submissions in recent years. Last year about 10,000 applications were received on the final day of submissions.”

The varsity had already announced a reservation quota for OBC category students sometime back to the tune of 9% for the current academic year. It also increased the number of seats by 18% to implement the quota.

Though the exact quantification of the “most-applied for” courses will be done only by Thursday evening, varsity officials said that student counselling hinted that like previous years the most popular courses are expected to be BCom (Hons), BA Economics (Hons) and BA English (Hons).

The university this year sold about 1.5 lakh application forms during the 15-day admission process. The next stage in the process will now include scanning of these admission forms and announcement of cut-off lists for various colleges.

“The admission forms have a huge range of courses and the students usually apply for at least 10 courses depending on their preferences, we have to scan through these applications and form a database. The forms will be classified now and a digital record would be formed. This data will be sent to various DU colleges by Thursday evening following which colleges will formulate their first cut-off list,” Parihar said.

The first cut-off list of various DU colleges will be announced on June 26, though St Stephen’s College has already declared its list. The elite college declared its cut-off lists on Tuesday evening with an increase of 1% over last year’s cut off in BA English (Hons) for students from commerce and arts streams.
