A 55-year-old Englishwoman has lodged a police complaint against her 30-year-old Kashmiri live-in partner of around three years that he duped her.
SRINAGAR: It’s a Chini Kum love story with a role reversal that went awfully wrong. A 55-year-old Englishwoman has lodged a police complaint against her 30-year-old Kashmiri live-in partner of around three years that he duped her of her heard-earned money on the pretext of buying a house here.
Petrina Churm of London came to India in 2005 to recover from a broken marriage. On a trip to Goa, she met Mukhtar Ahmad Guroo of Nehru Park, Srinagar, at his make-shift Kashmiri handicraft shop. Soon, she began frequenting the shop and they fell in love.
“As the relationship developed, Guroo persuaded Churm to buy a house in Gulab Bagh, Srinagar, so that they could settle down together. But the house had to be in his name as foreigners can’t purchase property in Kashmir,” said investigating officer Tahir Ahmad of the crime branch.
Eight months ago, Churm began living with Guroo in their Srinagar house. Her joy was, however, short-lived as Guroo threw her out soon after she exhausted all the money she had raised selling her belongings in London.
Guroo has been arrested by the crime branch under sections 420, 468 and 120 (B) of the RPC. He was produced before the court of additional munsif magistrate Raja Taslim, who sent him in police custody till June 17.
During the hearing, the additional magistrate asked Churm if she wanted Guroo punished. “I want justice to be done with me,” she replied.
“He produced fake documents to extract money from her. Investigations are in full swing,” Tahir said, adding, “I asked them whether they were married, they said no. They were living together for quite some time. They had even rented a one-room apartment in Goa.”
Churm’s lawyer Bashir Sadiq said their case was based on bank records which clearly showed that money was transferred from her account to Guroo’s.
