NEW DELHI: Organised retailers are being wooed for a catwalk on fashion street by hi-end designers who feel their joining hands will prove a winning combination.

Renowned designer Reena Dhaka said Indian fashion designers require organised retailing to sell in higher volumes, improve profits and create more visibility for their brands.

Vikram Phadnis, known more for dressing up the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai, said, "Retail is the biggest thing to happen in India and I will appreciate the tie-ups of designers and retailers both Indian and foreign. I would like to tie-up with organised retailers. It is a welcome step."

He said showcasing the collections at WIFW is a brand building exercise and it gives a platform for building long- term relationships, adding that he would like to sell his creations in volumes.

However, hi-end fashion going the retail way does not mean lowering of eye-popping prices. Fixing the maximum retail price, Phadnis said, depends on the retailers as "they know their business well".

Some of the designer labels are already available in retail chains such as Shoppers Stop, Pantaloons.

Designer Rehance, who is popular in southern parts of the country said, "I would love to retail my youth brand with the organised retailers. Absolutely a great thing to get into."

She further noted that a lot of big shoe brands are selling their products in Reliance Retail stores. She added "well-known UK brand Pavers is selling their shoes in Reliance Retail".

"Reliance Retail, Tata's Trent, RPG Group's Spencer, Ebony Retail Holdings and Lifestyle are participating in Wills Life Style Indian Fashion Week (WIFW) and they are welcome to tie-up with designers whose work they like" Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) Executive Director Sumeet Nair said. WIFW opened in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Nair said both retailers and designers are keen on tying up to accelerate their business.

Global luxury giant Louis Vuitton is also planning to tie-up with Indian designers and the domestic designers would follow suit, he added.

Other than organised retailers, about 100 domestic buyers including Ensemble, Aza, Kimaya are participating in the event, Nair said.
