“My son had left home around 10am for a job interview with a mobile company in Andheri.

Around noon he called me up and told me that he had got the job, and would start from Friday. He was returning home to break the good news to his mother himself. But fate had something else in store for us,” said Rashid Nazir Khan, father of Javed, who was killed by a BEST bus on Thursday afternoon.

Javed’s friend Dawood, who was riding pillion, was bitter. “No one came to our rescue. I requested many a taxi and tempo driver to take us to hospital, but no one bothered to stop.

Finally, an autorickshaw driver took us to Bhabha Hospital, but by that time it was too late. Javed was declared dead before admission,” said the graphic designer.

Previously, when BEST buses had been compared with the “killer” Blue Line buses of New Delhi, BEST general manager Uttam Khobragade had said, “It is unfair to compare our accidents with those of Blue Line. Their buses have featured in many head-on collisions, while in majority of the BEST fatalities, the victim came under the rear wheel of the bus, for which the driver should not be blamed.”
