NEW DELHI: The government is trying to retain the services of Kiran Bedi, the country’s first woman IPS officer, who put in a request for voluntary retirement in November. Union home secretary Madhukar Gupta on Wednesday indicated that the government was unlikely to accept Bedi’s request.

Gupta, while addressing the Foundation Day celebrations of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), said, “We have decided to put a big new responsibility on your shoulders and that means anchoring the National Police Mission.”
However, Bedi said, “My request for voluntary retirement stays.”

Clearly irked over being nudged out by YS Dadwal,  two years her junior, for the post of Delhi’s police commissioner in July, Bedi told DNA, “If the government thought that I was dispensable for the post of Delhi’s commissioner of police, I think I am dispensable for any other government job.”

Showering appreciation on her contribution to the service and her leadership qualities, both Gupta and National Security Adviser MK Narayanan made all attempts to lure Bedi back.

But the  words of praise didn’t seem to go down well with the Magsaysay Award winner. “I am glad that they do realise my leadership qualities, but then, the realisation has come in very late,” she concluded.
