The city’s airports may not have got the explosive detectors they had ordered two years ago.
But thanks to the initiative of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), it has finally got its own dog squad to detect explosives.
The four-dog team comprising Sun, Don, Zenia and Babli are now going to patrol the domestic and international terminals. Eight more dogs will join them soon.
“This will decrease our dependence on the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security dog squad during bomb detection operations. And after all the 12 dogs are inducted, we will be completely independent,” said Sanjay Prakash, Senior commandant, CISF.
The four dogs — two labradors and two German shepherds — were trained at the Indo-Tibet Border Police Dog Training Academy in Bhanu, Haryana, for six months.
The next batch of four is being trained by the Border Security Force at Tekanpur, near Gwalior. At present, the dogs work in day shifts, but once the full team is there, they will be available 24/7.
The dogs start their day at 5am with physical training and grooming which goes on till 8am. Then it’s time for work. They are on duty from 9 to 11.30am, where they visit the Santacruz and Sahar terminals.
At one time, only two dogs are used for day shifts and are called at night during an emergency. They return to their barracks at noon for lunch and an afternoon nap. Even the barracks they stay in are air-conditioned; each dog has his/her own room. They get Sundays off.
