CHENNAI: Reports of the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) getting help in India were validated on Saturday when the ‘Q’ branch of Tamil Nadu Police arrested two Sri Lanka-based LTTE  operatives and their Indian supporter in Chennai.

The LTTE men had smuggled communication equipment to Tiger-held areas by a boat from the Tamil Nadu coast and were making arrangements to take away another boat they had purchased.

On a tip-off, police arrested Lankans James Raja (46) and Gaurishankar Jayakumar (34) and Indian Ravi Kumar (45) when they had gone to the Chennai airport to check the status of James’ air ticket. Police seized Rs4,78,290 in Indian currency, Rs4,140 in Lankan and four mobile phones from the trio.

“This is Raja’s, an LTTE computer expert from Mannar in Sri Lanka, third visit to India this year. He has been in Tamil Nadu since October 10 and was carrying a return ticket to Colombo. Jayakumar, a sea Tiger (naval wing of the LTTE), was asked by his bosses to assist James in purchasing a boat for the LTTE. They purchased it from Rameswaram for Rs4.78 lakh from LTTE activist Karuppiah in London and had anchored it somewhere on the Thanjavur coast to be taken to Sri Lanka. Raja had already purchased and sent via sea 12 GPS units, a computer and some underwater gear. Ravi Kumar was assisting them in the operation,” ‘Q’ branch superintendent of police Ashok Kumar told DNA.

Intelligence reports have been indicating smuggling of arms and spare parts across the Palk Straits from Rameswaram, which is a little more than 20 km from Mannar.

Fishermen in Rameswaram had netted a few rockets along the international maritime border.
