Five members of a family from Vile Parle were arrested on March 3 this year for harassing their daughter-in-law that eventually led her to commit suicide.

Fed-up with constant physical and mental harassment by her husband and in-laws for dowry, 31-year-old Meena Desai committed suicide by hanging herself at her Vile Parle home.

According to the police, the accused wanted to buy some property in Mumbai and did not have the required money for which  they were constantly torturing Meena.

Immediately after the incident, Meena’s family was informed about it. On hearing about the incident, the family lodged a complaint with the police.

Based on the complaint, the police arrested Meena’s 31-year-old husband Ashish Desai, father-in-law Madhukar Desai, 73, mother-in-law Nanda Desai, 66, and brothers-in-law Hemant Desai, 40, and Umesh Desai, 44, for allegedly torturing Meena to bring dowry from her parents.

Five years’ RI in dowry case
Vivek Sarve an employee of a printing press married Reema Gosain in 1998 against the wishes of her parents and reaped the gruesome fruit of physical, emotional and mental harassment including black magic attacks in an attempt to separate the couple and forced visits to a tantrik in Thane.

Thanks to the tantrik, she had to go late in night to Bhandup and Mulund crematoriums to complete rituals and dispose of two coconuts on two different burning pyres.

Within two years of the unhappy marriage, depression and harassment took its toll leading this commerce graduate (BARC College) to jump off ‘Dhavalgiri Apartments’ in Andheri on December 11, 2000 and kill herself.

Additional Sessions Judge SN Sardesai on June 28, 2007 sentenced Vivek and his parents Madhuri and Madhukar to 5 years rigorous imprisonment and an aggregate fine of Rs2,000 each for dowry harassment and abetting suicide.

Ex-corporator arrested
Vidhyarthi Singh, a former Congress corporator from Borivali was arrested on June 29, 2007 by the Kasturba Marg police on the charges of physical harassment and dowry demands.

Singh’s two sons Mahendra Singh and Shailendra Singh were also named in the complaint registered by the two daughters-in-law Pratibha and Kiran Singh.

Vidhyarthi Singh was arrested under sections 498A and 506 of the Anti Dowry Act.

Four of a family arrested
The Dahisar police arrested a man and his parents for harassing his wife for dowry on January 24 this year.

According to the police, the accused Nalin Kapadia, married the victim in March 2005.
Initially, things were normal between them but slowly the accused and his parents Manishaben Kapadia and Mannubhai Kapadia started harassing the victim and demanded a dowry of Rs2 lakh.

Matters worsened when the victim gave birth to a baby girl. “The accused did not want a baby girl and started harassing the victim. They went to the extent of telling her to kill the baby,” an investigating officer said.
