KOLKATA: The intellectuals of West Bengal, led by Gyanpith award-winning writer and social activist Mahashweta Devi, now want to extend their movement against CPI(M) especially with regards to its land acquisition policies, beyond the boundary of the state.

Their immediate extension targets are the two other Left-ruled states of Kerala and Tripura. Their plan is to project Singur and Nandigram episodes as the model way of conducting a movement against CPI(M) and its land acquisition policies, so that the people concerned in these two states can adopt similar paths, as and when necessary, against their respective Left-ruled state governments.

However, they are silent on whether their movement expansion programme would include non-Left state governments too. It is learnt that a large part of their propaganda would based on analysis of the recently concluded panchayat elections in West Bengal, and especially on how the people at Singur and Nandigram gave a fitting reply to CPI(M) through the ballot box.

In fact, Mahashweta Devi has already kicked off her propaganda in Kerala. In a recent programme of the Committee Against the Invasion of Imperialists there, she attacked the VS Achuthanandan-led state government for its proposed initiative to displace people for the development of the Ernakulam Railway Goods (ERG) section, being constructed at a cost of around Rs700 crore.

At the meeting she spoke on on how CPI(M) had unleashed terror against the displaced farmers in Singur and Nandigram, and also called upon the people in Kerala to adopt similar models in their struggle against mass displacement. She called upon the Kerala intellectuals to join the movement by hitting the streets.
