NEW DELHI: The Gurjar agitation is set to cripple the capital, with the community deciding to stop the supply of essential commodities on Thursday.

Though the Gurjars won’t disrupt road and rail transport, the Centre has put the state on high alert.

“We don’t want to disrupt the lives of the people by blocking traffic, but won’t supply milk and vegetables tomorrow,” said Ramsaran Bhatti of Akhil Bharatiya Gujjar Mahasabha.

Bhatti claimed their agitation would not just cripple Delhi and the national capital region, but the entire north India would not receive essential commodities. “Our demand has to be met because the Rajasthan government had promised us so. Since the state government is not ready to honour its promise now, the agitation will continue,” he said, adding, “We don’t want to turn to violent means. We need moral support from people and would try not to harm them.”

The Thursday threat apart, the Gurjars blocked roads in Gurgaon, Faridabad and the border areas of Delhi for at least a couple of hours on Wednesday before police intervened to set things right.

“Since most buses and trucks are owned by us, we will not try to disrupt traffic on Thursday or burn tyres on roads,” Bhatti said.

Meanwhile, the ministry of home affairs called upon the police chiefs of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi to be alert as the Gurjars could get violent.
