Unless the pacer himself volunteers, WADA sleuths may never get to check him

MUMBAI: The truth behind the doping allegations against Shoaib Akhtar may never be known, the arrival of the World Anti-Doping Agency sleuths notwithstanding. As per the rules that guide the WADA members to do the random checking, the fiery pacer may escape being being dope-tested.

According to the laid-out procedure, two members of each team will be asked to appear for a dope test. Which players are required to appear for the test, of course, will be determined by a draw of lots, and not by the doubt perception or by the wishes of the WADA sleuths. As a member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India put it, unless of course Shoaib himself volunteers to appear before before the WADA officials, he may never be tested.

As per the procedure, the managers of the rival team randomly pick two numbers from a box containing numbers of all the playing members of the two teams. The numbers correlating to the players are called for the test. And if Shoaib’s name is not drawn, he doesn’t have to appear for testing.

“The players are selected by the manager who draws the lot from a box before each match. They are only numbered and the numbers are then matched with the players’ names who are called for dope testing,” Lalit Modi, the chairman of the IPL’s governing council, said. “The samples are then sent to the World Anti Doping Agency’s lab in Sweden.” BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said this was the procedure practised during the Champions Trophy, World Cup and Junior World Cup.

The anti-doping sleuths, who have come to India from Sweden, are technically officials of WADA, but actually are members of the WADA-recognised International Doping Test and Management, a private body which does the testing for the doping agency.

According to IPL sources, the IDTM sleuths were in Bangalore on Monday and they could go to Kolkata on Tuesday.
