Mangal Singh Champia, Dola, Bombayla and Reena get mega event berths
MUMBAI: The Archery Association of India (AAI) confirmed that besides Mangal Singh Champia in the men’s category, it will be Dola Banerjee, Bombayla Devi and Reena Kumari who will represent India in Beijing. This was decided following a AAI-organised two-day trials that concluded at the SAI Eastern Centre in Kolkata on Saturday.
There have been efforts to push Chekrovolu Swuro — who is struggling to find form — for the Games too as she has done well for the country and was instrumental in getting India a berth in the women’s section.
In fact she failed to finish within the top eight at the National ranking meet in Meerut and even failed to make it to the two-day trials. Considering her past form, her ability and experience, AAI president VK Malhotra requested the governing body to include Chekrovolu as a special case. The four confirmed in the Indian squad, however, will not have to undergo any more trials, sources in AAI said.
The four-member Indian squad for the third World Cup at Antalya in Turkey from May 27 to 31 will have archers who made it to the Olympic squad. The team for the fourth World Cup at Boe in France from June 24 to 28 will consist of top archers from across the country other than those who qualified for Beijing.
Meanwhile, the Archery Association of India (AAI) also formed the Indian recurve contingent for the Antalya World Cup to be from May 27-31. Apart from the four for Olympics, three best placed men and one woman from the two-day trails will form the squad.
World Cup squad:
Men: Mangal Singh Champia (Rly), Jayanta Talukdar, Rahul Banerjee (both Steel Plant) and Priyank Tyagi (UP).
Women: L. Bombayla Devi, Dola Banerjee, Reena Kumari (all Railways) andPunya Prabha (UP).
