NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader LK Advani’s meeting with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief KS Sudarshan on Sunday was another attempt to re-build bridges with the parent body which had forced his ouster from the post of party chief in 2005.

Advani spent around two hours with Sudarshan and sarakaryawaha (general secretary) Mohan Bhagwat at the organisation’s headquarters in the Mahal area of Nagpur in Maharashtra.

The RSS described the meeting as “routine”, saying Advani met Sudarshan since both happened to be in the city at the same time. “Advani called up the sarsanghachalak last night and sought a meeting. Sudarshan invited him over for an early lunch,” said an RSS spokesman.

Advani had just been to Karnataka and appears to have got a reality check during the visit to the poll-bound state. While the situation in the state is supposed to be the best ever for the saffron party, it is faced with internal problems due to dissension in its ranks and a lukewarm RSS cadre. In an admission of the possibility, Advani was reported to have said that if the BJP did not get a majority on its own in the state, it would sit in opposition.

Election management in the state is in the hands of Advani’s trusted lieutenants Arun Jaitley and Ananth Kumar.

“So have been the party’s affairs in most states, with the Advani lobby choosing and even imposing leaders of their choice on the party,” said a senior BJP leader while talking about the rebellion in the party’s Bihar unit. In state after state, the party is running into problems with disgruntled leaders levelling identical allegations against the leadership.

While the RSS has decided not to oppose Advani’s dominant position and projection as prime minister-in-waiting, it is none too pleased with the handling of party affairs.
