Capital’s Constitution Club, a hub of MPs and ex-MPs for years, will soon have a gym named Zero Hour and cafeteria called The Well

NEW DELHI: Parliamentarians can now flex their muscles in ‘Zero Hour’, then rush to ‘The Well’ for a cup of cappuccino! And, they needn’t worry about any privilege motion or notice, since this has the approval of Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee.

The Constitution Club in the capital, a hub of MPs and former MPs, is planning to name its newly-built gymnasium ‘Zero Hour’ and the cafeteria ‘The Well’, while a modern spa is likely to be called ‘Guillotine’.

The club’s renovation, under the supervision of a committee appointed by Chatterjee, is in its final stages.

The club, situated a stone’s throw away from parliament, is getting ready with state-of-the-art facilities for members and ex-members of the House.

After renovation, it will have a gymnasium, a modern spa, restaurant, business centre, billiards tables, a swimming pool and other sports facilities.

“It all started with the idea of naming sections of the renovated Constitution Club differently. We have tried our best to offer the best possible amenities in the club,” secretary of the House Committee Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

“The concept of Guillotine is of a place devoid of all discussions and debates. A spa, we found, could be one such place. Separate for men and women, it would be equipped with all kinds of modern facilities,” he said.

The venture, slated to change the way people looked at this more-than-half-a-century-old facility, is a coordinated effort of MPs from all parties.

The committee comprises the likes of Sandeep Dikshit, Naveen Jindal and even senior members such as Hannan Mollah who have meticulously worked for making this “dream” venture happen.

“This is a result of teamwork. Seniors such as Mollah are our guides and trustees. It is a dream project for the lawmakers as elite clubs in the city sometimes even turn away applications of membership from politicians,” Rudy said.

The project, originally planned in the 1990s, could not take off due to financial constraints. But with the present speaker showing interest, it has finally got a budget allocation.
