NEW DELHI: AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi will not be in the long list of Indian VIP’s heading for the cooler climes of Europe to beat the summer heat.
According to his political managers, he will instead be roughing it out in the backwaters of eastern UP or some Dalit or Adivasi hamlet in Chattisgarh or Bihar.
Encouraged by the response to his tours, the AICC general secretary has instructed the team working with him to draw up plans for his visit well into July. “There will be no let up in his tour programme. We have been asked to continue as planned and we have already drawn up plans till July,” says a member of his planning team.
The only respite that Rahul Gandhi is likely to get from the scorching north Indian summer is when he campaigns in Karnataka for the assembly elections. Last month, he had visited some parts of the state as part of his efforts to reach out to the SCST’s and Adivasi’s.
For the past couple of years Rahul has been regularly taking his vacations but this being an election year his decision to stay back in the country and rough it out during the summer appears to have been taken after careful thought. The AICC general secretary does not want to break the momentum generated by his visits. Besides, his managers believe that it will add to his image if he is seen slogging it out in the summer rather than taking the easy option of chilling out overseas.
According to sources close to him, final touches are being given to his tour programme which is likely to include a return visit to Orissa, the state from where he begun the current phase of his yatras. He will also visit parts of eastern UP, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.
