MUMBAI: Alarmed by the increase in cyber crime and human trafficking, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has recommended the setting up of a formal structure in criminal investigation departments (CIDs) for enhanced international cooperation.

CBI director Vijay Shankar made the suggestion after inaugurating the second Interpol Liaison Officers’ (ILOs’) conference in New Delhi on Wednesday.

“Such formal structures at the state level should have the wherewithal to coordinate with the National Central Bureau of India (As the CBI is known to Interpol) and field formations in respective states,” Shankar told the delegates. He promised full training assistance for the structure. Shankar highlighted the necessity of international cooperation in curbing crime.

“Interpol is doing a commendable job in providing a common platform to member-states, linking them 24/7 through a secure network and tracking fugitives through red-corner notices,” Shankar, also a member of the Interpol executive committee, said. He wanted the ILOs’ conference to be held every year so that a robust and efficient structure for international cooperation could be put in place.

As of today, 186 countries are members of Interpol, which expects voluntary cooperation from member-states. Interpol has training facilities for officers of member-states in emerging areas of crime such as cyber crime. In March-April 2008, it held a train-the-trainers programme on cyber crimes at the CBI academy in Ghaziabad.
