NEW DELHI: A deadly cocktail of “Maoists, Muslims (fundamentalist variety), media (owned by the corporates), RSS, Congress, Trinamool Congress and foreign-funded NGOs” is trying to ruin the CPI(M)’s prospects in the ensuing panchayat elections in West Bengal, the party believes.
These “reactionary” forces, active in West Bengal and particularly in Nandigram, the Americas and the European Union, are getting jittery over the Left’s resurgence in Latin and South America (the latest being Paraguay) and nearer home in Nepal, and are working on a strategy to wipe out Communism from the world, it feels.
Not just the CPI(M), Communist parties across the world are discussing the EU “offensive”. Last fortnight, international communist parties (of which the CPI-M is also a signatory) came out with a statement decrying the EU campaign.
The drive against the EU was initiated by Communist Party of Greece (CPG) and a joint statement was sent to the CPI(M), inter alia, saying, “The EU commission has organised a joint hearing with Slovenian presidency on crimes committed by totalitarian regimes in order to further reinforce the anti-communist measures in EU member countries.”
Commenting on EU’s recent “discussion on draft framework decision”, the CPG missive to the CPI(M) said: “We consider that we are facing dangerous escalation of the anti-communist offence since it is the first time that such initiative comes form the commission itself, ie, from the executive body of the EU involving the national governments, no matter if the commission has no legitimacy, especially concerning these issues.”
The CPI(M) honchos feel that the EU commissioners are pursuing a hidden, unfinished agenda of complete purge of communists from its strongholds.
Though it is silent on the EU “campaign”, party mouthpiece People’s Democracy in an editorial in the forthcoming issue on the anti-CPI(M) gang-up in West Bengal inter alia says: “That all reactionary forces will combine to thwart the advance of Communist-led progressive forces is nothing new. The stirring opening paragraph of the ‘Communist Manifesto’ speaks of the holy alliance of all reactionary forces of Europe against the rising Communist force. Things have not changed since then and they shall not either till a new correlation of class forces is brought about favouring the people under the leadership of the Left Front.”
“Efforts are on to replicate the forging of a reactionary combination with the Congress, the Trinamool Congress, the Hindu communal RSS/BJP, some Muslim fundamentalist organisations with the Maoists and foreign-funded NGOs. This combination was ably assisted by sections of the ‘corporate media’ during the Nandigram disturbances. The Maoists are acting as the murderous mercenary agents of the forces of reaction.”
The CPG statement said the EU hearing comes in the wake of provocative measures like the recent ban of the Communist Youth Union in the Czech Republic, the processes against the Hungarian Communist Workers Party, the rehabilitation of Antonescou in Romania, the destroying of the monument of the Red Army in Estonia, the vandalism of the grave of Janos Kadar, the establishment of “national institutes for the investigation of the crimes committed by the communists and the new ‘lustration laws’ in Poland, Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria and the anti-communist statement of the European parliament regarding Budapest 1956.”
“The debate dredges up the supposed crimes of socialism, ignoring the millions of communists’ sacrificed in the struggle against fascism, in order to hide the great crimes committed in both past and present by imperialism all over the world,” the communist parties said, adding, “It wishes to poison the minds of the younger generation, which is increasingly rejecting capitalist barbarity, and are coming together to fight for the concepts and ideals of socialism.”
