PUNE: Mumbai Football Club have qualified for the I-League elite group next year after they were held to a 1-1 by the stubborn Vasco Sports Club in an ONGC second division league match at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, on Monday. Papiah Jagadish Kumar scored for the Mumbai side while, Luciano Sabrosa converted a penalty in the 67th minute for the Goan side to restore parity.

With the bottom placed Pune Football Club and the Indian Bank, Chennai still to open their accounts, David Booth’s boys are through to the elite group with seven points. We have seven points, and even if the bottom placed Pune FC and Indian Bank, Chennai win both their matches, we will still make it to the elite group, as four from here qualify for the elite group,” said the Mumbai FC coach David Booth.

“We were nothing ten months ago when we started, but the boys worked hard and that has paid off,” Booth told the DNA from Guwahati.

“The boys have assured themselves by Rs1.5 million and if they go on to win the championship they will double their booty,” said general manager Henry Menezes.
Chirag United tops the table with nine points and are followed by Mumbai FC with seven points while Mohammedan Sporting are third in the standing with six points.
Chirag had already made it to the top rung on Sunday when they pipped Indian Bank, Chennai by a solitary goal.
