While JD(S) workers staged demonstrations in front of state party president Merajuddin Patel’s residence on Monday, a few Congress leaders have joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to gain tickets.
Patel was literally under house arrest when a JD(S) ticket aspirant Venkatesh Murthy and his supporters locked him up for eight hours and stoned his house. Another aspirant nicknamed ‘hooch queen’ Marimuttu accused Patel of taking Rs50,000 from her with a promise to field her as party nominee from Pulakeshinagar in Bangalore. “I personally handed over the money to Patel, who promised a ticket. I have been cheated,” Marimuttu claimed. Another leader Veeresh Kumar who had sought Dal nomination staged a protest in Bangalore.
JD(S) has announced a list of 64 candidates for the first phase of elections, withholding the nominations for the remaining 25 constituencies. As soon as the list was declared, those who were denied tickets thronged the party office and the homes of Patel and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda to express their disappointment.
Meanwhile, Congress party aspirant Ravindra’s supporters tried to commit suicide by stabbing themselves in Mandya district as his nomination was replaced by Kannada movie actor Ambareesh. Police had to resort to lathi charge to bring the situation under control.
Senior Congress leader and former Union minister CK Jaffer Sharief has been sulking over the denial of party ticket to his grandson, Wahab. He is said to be contemplating joining JD(S) or Bharatiya Samajwadi party (BSP).
