The Mumbra police have busted an inter-state prostitution racket and arrested five people from Pune and Mumbra who were part of the racket. However, the kingpin, a woman, is still at large.

The racket came to light on April 13 when a man filed a complaint against five people alleging that they cheated him by selling his daughter, a minor, in Pune after promising that she would be married to a boy who had bewitched her.

According to the complainant, a person named Mohammad Shaikh, alias Munna, who stays in his neighbourhood, had an affair with his daughter. He promised to marry her and then took her to Pune. In Pune, she found that Munna, along with an accomplice, Imram Momin, had sold her to two pimps - Magesh Kumbhar and Ganesh Satpute for Rs15,000 per month.

Satpute and Kumbhar forced Reshma into prostitution. She, however, managed to contact her father and narrated the incident to him.  "The complainant gave us the number from where Reshma had called him," senior inspector AT Sonde of the Mumbra police station said. "We contacted Reshma on that number but she was afraid to reveal anything about Satpute, Kumbhar and Imran, as they had threatened to bump her off."

The police had many conversations with Reshma and persuaded her to run away from Pune and return to Mumbra.

"She met us in Mumbra on April 15 and then we set a trap to nab the five accused," Sonde said. The Mumbra police first arrested Munna and his woman accomplice Munni, who introduced young girls to him. The two would then send the girls to Imran in Pune, where they were allegedly sold to Kumbhar and Satpute.

Imran was also arrested on April 16. Later, a Mumbra police team arrested Satpute and Kumbhar from the Katraj area of Pune.

Initial interrogation of the duo revealed that the kingpin was a woman.
They told the police that she supplied girls in Pune and Hyderabad and a few other southern states.

While arresting Satpute and Kumbhar, the police found and rescued two girls, who were also residents of Mumbra.
