MUMBAI: Dabur Onquest, a subsidiary of Dabur Pharma that specialises in cancer diagnostics, is spreading its network overseas.

The company has started commercial operations in Nepal and is in advanced stages of setting up shop in Sri Lanka. Besides, initial market audit in Kuala Lumpur and Manila are underway and it hopes to start operations in the two markets in the next two years.

Vivek Trikha, head - diagnostics, Dabur Onquest said, “We plan to enter three more countries (Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Philippines) in the next two years, of which Sri Lanka would start by October 2008.”

Dabur Onquest set up its first international commercial collection centre in Kathmandu after a pilot run for 6-8 months during which it received a good 200 samples. The company has entered into a joint venture with majority holding with Nepal-based Annapurna Diagnostics, which will market all its tests there. Dabur Onquest further plans to develop two more collection centres in Nepal, namely in Bharatpur and Chitwann.

Dabur Onquest works on a hub-and-spoke model with its hub in Delhi, where all the samples collected across 45 centres in the country are sent for processing.

For its South East Asia venture, Dabur would continue to use its Delhi laboratory as the hub.

The company expects revenues of about Rs 1 crore each from its venture in Nepal and Sri Lanka, to start with.

“The market size in Kuala Lumpur and Manila would be different and much bigger than Nepal or Sri Lanka,” Trikha added.

The diagnostic chain plans to eventually enter the developed markets, albeit with a full-fledged lab there, rather than a collection centre.
