After three dacoities in two months, officials say travellers should 'stand united'

MUMBAI: The next time you are on board a train and at the receiving end of dacoits, do not look to any help from railway security.

Senior inspector AK Mishra of Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Kalyan said, “After the recent dacoity cases, RPF personnel are deployed on all the trains. But if on some trains, security staff is not present and there is a dacoity or robbery, passengers should stand united and tackle the situation. Also, majority of the people nowadays carry mobile phones. So they should alert the RPF or Government Railway Police (GRP) control room about it immediately, so that action is taken against the dacoits at the next station”.

Keeping in with the railway’s newfound policy of “self-defence is the best defence”, announcements are being made over the public address system at important rail junctions like Kalyan. In the past two months three cases of dacoity took place in north bound trains between Kalyan and Nasik railway stations.

Ten to 12 people armed with knives and choppers robbed passengers in the general bogie of the Kurla-Patna Express on three occasions in February and March. GRP and RPF both then made special squads then to nab the people behind these dacoities. Eleven members of a gang involved in the three dacoities were nabbed by GRP on March 8.

RPF officials are also keeping tabs on those boarding trains with special measures like video recordings. Mishra said, “We try to record the face of each and every person boarding the train through CCTV cameras installed at the platforms.”
