NEW DELHI: The murder case of Delhi police's encounter specialist ACP Rajbir Singh is turning murkier by the day. The Haryana government has sought a CBI probe, a day after investigations revealed that of the several calls made by the accused Vijay Bharadwaj, as many as 14 were traced to VIP numbers allotted to some officers in the crime branch, of which Singh was a part.

The investigation has also revealed that the ownership of the revolver used for committing the crime too has been traced to a person from Jhajjar in Haryana. The Gurgaon police said that the revolver was an unlicensed one and belonged to one Devender Singh from Jhajjar. The revelation has raised doubts about Bharadwaj's claim that the .32 revolver had been given to him by the slain cop just three days before the murder for his own safety.

Singh's family, which had doubted Bharadwaj's confession from day one suspects the involvement of some people within the Delhi police in the crime. Singh's wife Narmada said, "Bharadwaj has not killed my husband. We suspect that he only facilitated the meeting between my husband and the actual murderers. Bharadwaj is only a small time property dealer. He would not have the courage to kill a senior cop. There could have been people within the force who were jealous of my husband who could have aided the crime."

The cop's father Mamchand also sees a larger conspiracy in the case. "My son was a senior cop but not a single top officer of the Delhi police turned up at his funeral. I am certain that the case is much more complicated than it seems," he said.

Meanwhile, the Haryana government on Friday decided to seek a CBI probe in the case following a request by Singh's family. "On the family’s demand, I have directed state DGP to request (the Centre) for an investigation into the killing by the CBI," said Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
