ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s caretaker human rights minister Ansar Burney, who had played a key role in getting Kashmir Singh released and repatriated to India, has said he was not ready to play any role for the release of Sarabjit Singh, for he was a terrorist who was involved in the gruesome murders of several innocent Pakistanis.

Burney said the governments of the two countries should sit together to ensure the release of all those detainees on either side of the border who are not involved in any terrorist activity.

Asked whether he was playing any role to ensure the release of Sarabjit, as he did for Kashmir Singh, Burney said, “I will not fight for a terrorist who is involved in the murder of several innocent Pakistanis. As far as the case of Kashmir Singh is concerned, I had pleaded his case under an impression that he was innocent. However, he has already admitted to being an Indian spy, thus shattering my trust.”

He said there is a big difference between the nature of the charges against Kashmir Singh and Sarabjit Singh. While Kashmir Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment on spying charges, Sarabjit has been charged with carrying out four terrorist attacks in Pakistan killing at least 14 people, he said.
